GRAVE042:The Lava Children : self-titled cd/lp/digital download (released on May 26th, 09) First LP pressing is 500 copies and comes on hazy green/pink wax / LP COMES WITH DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD
With The Lava Children’s self-titled debut, the listener is immediately aware they’re hearing something completely uncommon. In fact, The Lava Children are something completely uncommon. As the music industry becomes ever more jaded and manufactured and music is treated like so much invaluable garbage to be traded and tossed about freely, it seems like hearing something that sounds totally new is becoming less and less of a regular occurrence. Here you’ll find no familiar “classic rock overtones.” There are no hackneyed “angular guitar tones”- in fact, you’re only occasionally reminded that you’re even hearing instruments. From the dreamy, weirdly programmed Colecovision-on-the-fritz nonsense of opening track, “I Am a Pony,” to the underwater opium cabaret wash of “Particles,” to the discordant, drunk music box stagger of “Troll,” every track on this mini-lp bears the same distinctive stamp of not sounding a whole lot like anything else you’ve heard. This music may have been found inside a rotting old fish, plucked from a muddy, overgrown swamp and encrusted with plankton and river rot. It could have been stuck in an ice block in the far-flung pitch-black night of the frozen tundra or growing out of a patch of moss and fungus on the side of a mighty California redwood tree. It could’ve been found buried in an Egyptian desert wasteland, firmly clutched to the now-hollow chest of some bygone dusty old corpse… and it just might be cursed. Hell- maybe it’s from space, or some kind of message from the future. But fact of the matter is it’s made by a couple of Oklahomans who are soon to be Texans...Though that doesn’t make it any less of a fascinating listen. Close your eyes, turn off all the lights, and turn this album up. See if the little hairs on the back of your neck aren’t immediately standing at full attention as you find yourself awash in weird, half-remembered memories of playing with a dog you had when you were five years old, deep in the swiftly darkening woods and far from home. 1. I am a Pony

It seems that they understand that for a band that's been making music for ten years to sound fresh, their ideas must be fresh. Sagarmatha integrates the more anthemic sensibilities of Two Conversations (mainly in the very catchy vocal melodies) and the density and distorted rock moments of Peregrine with the experimental tendencies of both Low Level Owl records. While LLO alternated noise and song over two records, pushing and pulling the listener in and out of the din and the narrative, Sagarmatha is a world where the melodic vocals and knotty delayed guitars Appleseed Cast is known for are supported by (and can't exist without) the ambient noise, electronic beats, bells, percussion, and keyboards the band has grown to love. They've been pegged with various genre names over the years, most of which they've outgrown and outlived. At this point, I think they are best described as weavers: of sounds beautiful and horrible, always intriguing, and of stories in sometimes inscrutable but always evocative lyrics. Their songs draw you in immediately, but demand multiple listens, which is how it should be I think, and is why they've inspired such a loving and long-lasting following. They've weathered many storms of fashion. Sagarmatha is mountain-climbing music, Appleseed Cast are mountain-climbers. Sagarmatha is epic in scope and sound, evoking the horror and beauty of nature, the sublime. A band bred by the ocean and born in Kansas is unafraid to stare into the void of sea or sky. As points of reference, I suggest this record fits somewhere between the intersection of Low and the Flaming Lips, Can and the Postal Service, or Fugazi and Sigur Ros. First pressing (1000 copies) comes colored in a Maroon with purple splatter 2xlp with one bonus track not found on the cd version. 4 copies of this left! Next pressing is black. 1. Influenced by the sounds of The Flaming Lips song from which the name Hospital Ships is drawn, Geiger's debut exudes a seasoning of classic influences including John Lennon, The Zombies, and ELO to produce a bedroom pop symphony. Exploring relationships both failed and ongoing with friends, lovers, and pets, Geiger delicately teases the listener with his boyish tenor of a voice. In the background, muted horns swell, pianos twinkle, and percussion marches in step. Mixed mostly by John Congleton (Explosions In The Sky, Modest Mouse,The Mountain Goats, The Polyphonic Spree), Oh, Ramona is the culmination of over two and half years of writing and recording. Highlights include the upbeat opener "Bitter Radio Single," the symphonic majesty of "I Want It To Get Out," the tender "Girls," and the truly pet sounds-influenced title track. This record comes packaged in an 18pt chipboard gatefold sleeve and is lovingly hand assembled by your friends at Graveface Records. "Nearly four years after the relentlessly grim The West Is the Future, Darren Jackson returns to his solo identity as Kid Dakota, having spent the intervening years as both a producer/engineer with his own studio, and as co-frontman of the considerably poppier Minneapolis indie act the Olympic Hopefuls alongside Erik Appelwick of Tapes 'n Tapes and Vicious Vicious. (Following Appelwick's recent departure, the band has since shortened its name to the Hopefuls.) No one could possibly mistake A Winners Shadow for an ABBA record -- "Transfusion," a catchy song about heroin addiction and psychic oblivion in Mexico, and the dealer-and-addict saga "Puffy Jackets" are two of the sunnier tunes to be found here -- but it at least acknowledges the possibility of happiness in songs like the nearly hopeful, energetic "Chutes and Ladders." And at least "Long Odds" is about a wild-eyed gambling addict instead of a drug addict, so that's mildly less depressing and squalid. The new, stripped-down lineup of drummer Ian Prince, with Jackson handling everything else, gives the album a stark, bare-bones intimacy that's heightened by Jackson's clean, sparse production. That makes a refreshing change from the hazy slowcore vibe of Kid Dakota's first two albums released on Low's Chairkickers Union label. Along with the incrementally sunnier lyrical outlook, the crystalline, nearly live sound of tracks as varied as the aggressive, surging opener "New York System" and the close-miked, stripped-down intimacy of the slow-building "Downhill" marks a new and welcome progression in Kid Dakota's career." ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide 1.New York System 320kbps Digital Download: $8 / USA: $10-CD (Priority Mail), $12-LP (Media Mail) / Canada: $10-CD, $14-LP / Rest of the World: $10-CD, $20-LP (prices include shipping)

After Azure Ray disbanded in 2004, Orenda Fink (one half of the duo) crafted her debut as a solo artist: the acclaimed "The Invisible Ones," (Saddle Creek) inspired by the mythologies of the South and her experiences with Vodou in Haiti. Through the "Invisible Ones" touring cycle, she assembled several different touring bands, along the way making profound musical and personal friendships with her band mates. One such relationship was with Adrianne Verhoeven (The Anniversary.) After several solo tours with Adrianne in her band, and with a little astrological nudge, Orenda decided to form a new band using the cream of the crop of her touring crew. The band she formed, Art in Manila, is comprised of Orenda (guitar, vocals), Adrianne (keys, vocals), Dan McCarthy (McCarthy Trenching, Mayday, Bright Eyes), also on keys, Steve Bartolomei (Mal Madrigal) on guitar, Ryan Fox (The Good Life) on bass, and Corey Broman (Dance Me Pregnant) on drums. 'Set The Woods On Fire' is the band's debut album, recorded in Omaha, Nebraska, by Joel Petersen (The Faint, Broken Spindles) 1. An outsider to the burgeoning Portland music scene, Gibson's early choice of venues (an AIDS hospice here, a kindergarten class there) and her complete lack of music scene knowledge may have confused erstwhile veterans, but her homespun sincerity, enchanting voice, and mature songwriting won `em all over in a heartbeat. Listening to If You Come to Greet Me, it's immediately apparent something magical happened at Portland's Typefoundry Studios in Summer 2006 with the capable assistance of Adam Selzer (Norfolk & Western). The release is haunting, perfectly bolstered by gorgeous, orchestral arrangements that never detract from the melodic backbone of Gibson's songwriting. By the end of the sessions, almost all the members of Norfolk & Western had enthusiastically contributed performances. Wayne Miller filled out the troupe with tasteful, loping upright bass lines and Alex James (Delorean) stopped in to sing a few bars. If You Come to Greet Me demonstrates a rich tapestry of emotion over nine songs--hope, ennui, reflection, inspiration, loneliness, happiness, yearning--all stitched together with a steady songwriting hand, where imagery dovetails with melody in an irresistible way. 1. It doesn't use 'high-tech' gadgets or computers. Members go by aliases like Tobacco (vocals) and Father Hummingbird (Rhodes and monosynth). Most folks refer to the band as being completely detached from the 'real world', while they're actually probably more connected to the 'real world' than anyone else. Its geographical and societal seclusion allows Black Moth to create pop songs uninfluenced by mainstream tunes. Songs are created with a fresh slate-- a complete naivity for 'what's hot' at the moment. Dandelion Gum completely affirms this notion by presenting a collection of fairy-tale psyche-pop that grabs listeners with obscure and unique hooks. Black Moth Super Rainbow gifts listeners with an equally addictive alternative to mainstream pop-- just as brilliant and much more creative. 3rd and current pressing is White vinyl with Dark Pink splatter. Since its’ inception in 2002, Graveface has released albums by Monster Movie (ex-Slowdive), The Loose Salute (Mojave 3 side project), Kid Dakota, Appleseed Cast, Art in Manila (ex-Azure Ray), Octopus Project, BMSR and many more. The Long Forgotten Friend's 14 songs (10 songs on the cd version) are loosely based on stories and memories of a relative from the far past, whose tragic life has metamorphosed into legend over the course of time. This is music to listen to while driving through abandoned cities and ghost towns, imagining their disintegration. Rather than drums making the melody as on their previous efforts, banjo and vocals are at the foreground of the landscape. The drumming is minimalist, almost spastic and, as always, the guitars are the ghosts. Dreamend has taken a darker, folky, more nightmarish road than before. Some evidence of this can be found on the tracks Your Kiss, Scratch and Deathwatch Carnival 1965. Conversely, they have found themselves with more poppy, almost sing-alongs than ever before (see Are you Waking and The Tulip Staircase). Appearances by Toto of the Octopus Project and Darren Jackson of Kid Dakota add some outside sounds, while Darren and John Congleton's (see Explosion in the Sky, Modest Mouse, etc) mixing bring them all together. Listeners are encouraged to buy the vinyl version as it includes the cd version for free, contains 4 extra songs-16 minutes worth of music, a handmade pop-up gatefold by William Schaff (GYBE!, Okkervil River etc), and an extra cd of demos and alternate versions. The Octopus Project is known and loved for their uncategorizable broken-guitars-meet-samplers-meet-drums-meet-drum machines sound, while the musical island of Black Moth Super Rainbow would rather play their songs in the woods and not let you know if their gear is broken or working just fine. Holding hands from Austin to Pittsburgh, they set out to create one of the wilder pop records of the year. For anyone familiar with both bands, may you find yourself at peace with this dream record. But know that not all is as it seems, and the challenge of figuring out which band played which parts may sometimes be impossible. While a couple tracks did make it to the record in their original, one-band form, most were passed back and forth for several rounds of dismemberment, rearrangement, and augmentation. The result overflows with sonic treats: cut-up beats and vocoder melodies collide with huge, distorted riffs. A theremin orchestra descends into layered steel guitars before all is dissolved in a wash of hazy synths. The Octopus Project appears courtesy of Peek-A-Boo Records. They have wowed audiences in 2006 at Coachella, and were named one of Rolling Stone's breakout bands of SXSW. They will soon be going into the studio to record their very highly anticipated third album in 2007. Black Moth Super Rainbow lives on Graveface Records, and although known as somewhat of an enigma, has come out of the forest in 2006 to play at the request of bands like Of Montreal and The Black Angels. Daturah cannot be merely explained or pigeonholed but instead, felt, by the listener. Hailing from Frankfurt, Germany, this instrumental combo stretch their riffs through audible taffy pulls and seep in crisp and thinly layered synths along with half buried samples to create a listening experience that jolts the senses. While staying true to the Krautrock glide of Can and Tangerine Dream, Reverie is intricately woven headphone music for those who like their loudness plunging to the depths of ocean trench droning while treading upon a moody middle ground of pure resonance and dulcet friction. They may rock their instrumental guile a bit heavy at times but it’s all weaved into a trance-inducing and ambient sojourn into a vivid panorama of love, fear and anger exhibiting how sometimes that music sans words can offer all the explaining there is to offer. 1. Thrillingly, their ability to 'heal and grow' is still present and still unequalled by other men. Featuring the art of Mr. William Schaff on both the inside and cover. 1. With a sound as gauzy and narcotized as classic U.K. shoegazers Lush, Slowdive, and My Bloody Valentine, THIRD TRANSMISSION is both a blast from the past and a breath of fresh air. Singer Rachel Staggs drips just the right amount of honey in her Nyquil-sweet vocals, while dewy echoes of guitar and splashes of drum create an atmospheric glaze over the pop backbone of songs such as "Walk Away" and "It Won't Be Long." Experimental Aircraft are a rare, glistening oasis in the Texas heat. 1. Stellar 320Kbps Digital Download: $8 / USA: $10 (1st Class) / Canada: $10 / Rest of the World: $10 (prices include shipping)

You can expect minutes of instrumental trips a la Mogwai, timid popsongs as patented by Pinback and postrock like the Album Leaf; however, their music sounds warmer and more beautiful than their idols. They describe their new album as repetition, sparse electronics, choirs, melancholy, warm guitars, and flemish blokes having fun. These guys have played the Belgian and Dutch indie clubs and some nice festivals (Dour, Motel Mozaique...) as well as supporting bands like Karate, Death Cab for Cutie, The Album Leaf, Logh, B Fleischmann, The New Year, 65daysofstatic, The Berg Sans Nipple and more. 1. Rest assured Fec isn´t just some fly-by-night knob twiddler but instead a visionary with a true penchant for manipulating the Atari 2600 tossed into the mix with a mind-boggling night where Ennio Morricone, Kraftwerk, and Black Dice paint the town red. Still going strong as the resident DJ for Graveface Records where he puts on sets sans spinning the records between the live sets of the artists from the labels roster, Fec´s second release, Kongmanivong, under the Power Pill Fist moniker perches him atop the summit of modern day experimental music. Kongmanivong is a hearty collage of hazy dub resonance and sticky funk with the abrasiveness of early industrial paladins such as Nitzer Ebb and Frontline Assembly. Even though the most seasoned of noise rock fans will dig it, Kongmanivong keeps the squalls of fuzz abundant but simmers them down into a disturbing procession of skronky techno and globs upon globs of post-modern meets neo-Krautrock all underlined with a seedy pop underbelly that is enigmatically and simultaneously jarring and soothing. Never have the terms bi-polar, haywire and ambient been able to be tossed around freely in a single summation of music as they are when mentioning Kongmanivong. 1. The Salute released a one off limited edtion EP for Best Before Records in late 2004 called "Suck It Up Buttercup". Since then the band have been hibernating in the studio with hot-shot engineer Gareth Parton (The Beta Band, The Go Team, The Pipettes, Mojave3) and producer Pritpal Soor creating their opus. The set of 11 songs tries to encapsulate togetherness, loneliness, love and lost loves, surfing, partying, wanderlust, home-cookin, beaches, fields, stars and bars. 1. But this time it's Aaron who takes center stage on vocals. LITTLE EYES, Hundred Hands's first release, pulls at the right parts at all the right times - the texture, the feel, the sound of everything - creating a surrounding that is abundant in introspection and sonic inspiration. LITTLE EYES is flawlessly executed. With producer Ed Rose on drums / percussion, this trio of post-hardcore heroes can do no wrong. 2005 marks the long awaited return of the band. After 4 years of wait the new release (and very first full length) saw the light of the sun by Chicago label Graveface. "HER ACCENT WAS EXCELLENT" is filled with emo anthems, touching lyrics, dreamy melodies and some instrumental jewels. Legends never die. 1. Essentially, the sounds of Power Pill Fist are almost exclusively made with an Atari 2600. I think this guy adds some guitar or synth. Maybe. I'd call the PPF sound: listenable noise. Unlike a lot of power electronics/noise I don't have to be really angry to listen to this disc. Listening to PPF brings back all sorts of bizarre memories of how my Atari 2600 started acting bizarre after I accidentally spilled an entire can of Aldi's Cream Soda into it. None of the games would play, but, man, would that thing pump out some crazy sounds. So, if you're like me, and you remember the aldi cream soda pop + Atari 2600 disaster of your youth with fondness, you owe it to yourself to check out this sound. 1. Well, the trio would release Maybe we're making God sad and lonely, of course - this 6-track spectacle of twinkling 'life-breath'. With two 8+ minute designs ("a place in thy memory", "new zealand" - the latter being a split capture of Dreamend improvisation - 10 full minutes of it), you have plenty of time to dim the lights, spark some emotion (or simply light a candle - it's your life) and reasonably lose yourself in the atmosphere adapted from instrument to tape found here. For most of the album, not a word needs to be spoken by the band itself - in the seasoned capture of Japan's Mono (minus the strings), yet there are moments when a story could do the textured 'ambiance' positive - like "In Her Little Bed We Lay Her". This repeat player - combining the goosebump team of bells / glockenspiel (possibly), some slide instrumentation and a buried layer of synths is displayed while a woman recounts a ghost story from the Civil War era to her friend. As she puts it in the beginning, "I'd like to tell you a ghost story that'll really raise the hair on yer head".. . yes, it does. I have replayed this track alone more this year than any other album combined, it's the precise formula of a band incorporating their unique sound and infusing dialogue to create a work of art. "Iceland", one of 3 compositions where the band opts for an audio microphone is properly titled. A landscape of the Dreamend guitar / gentle drum & cymbal / "dream state" swirl passes through a filter of ethereal vocals that treat each other to make you yearn to compare Dreamend to someone.. . - but you honestly know in your blissful heart that doing so would be all wrong. Follow that with the brief rocker that calls herself "Mary Cogswell & Fred Vaillancourt" - it lasts long enough for a females captured voice to state "I don't know.. . what's real any more" (I second that - medication can help) before Dreamend explode into assault territory; full drums & all six strings. A perfect freeze frame of a band inventing grand, illusive schemes. The recording notes reveal Maybe we're making God sad and lonely was captured entirely in one evening, and only revisited on 2 occasions to add guitar and voice - that, itself, is a major fucking feat. + kaleb :: (08.29.05) 1. The first being the genealogy of their band name, most likely a reference to the title of the debut album by the then Malcolm Mooney fronted incarnation of krautrock mega-legends, Can. The second fact, slightly more relevant to discussing the bands work, is that Monster Movie features Christian Savill, former member of shoegazing pioneers Slowdive. While other Slowdive ex-members Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell have continued to put out material on mega-indie 4AD for the last few years, both in the form of twangy mope-rock outfit Mojave 3 and as solo artists, Savill's half-decade long collaboration with songwriting partner Sean Hewell has remained a slightly more obscured gem of the indie-underground. Transistor is perhaps another step away from what could only be the mixed blessing-curse of being constantly associated with a ground-breaking act like Slowdive. 1. Its 10 tracks effectively create the sunshine-through-a-million-clouds atmosphere that the trio has honed over their 4 year existence. Like an epic journey through a sleeping graveyard, "as if by ghosts" is a grey, but pastoral scene. Drums are the melody, guitars are the ghosts, and imagery is the feeing that drives dreamend's newest. The forty five minute trip flows with the grace of a 23 year-old growing a sepiatone beard. The magic of this collection of songs lies in the weathering of what was. To conjure the spirits of discarded memories, each arbum is packaged with an authentic, completely unique photograph from the early 1900s, squared off by a simpistic, lunch-bag frame. The selfdom of each exclusive cover, paired with the apathetic stills of moth-eaten American life, best suits the albums integrity. "as if by ghosts" feels like a beautifuly focused record on such seemingly unfocused themes as those. Ryan says he's 23, but i know he's either 25 or 22. -tom (black moth super rainbow) 1.
